Reporting Child Abuse

The Little Voice Project

The unfolding scandal at Penn State University has become a wakeup call for the nation. The failure of high-ranking college officials to step forward and report allegations of child abuse has tarnished the reputation of the school and one of America’s most celebrated collegiate coaches. The Penn State tragedy reminds us that each individual in society has a responsibility to protect children from abuse. In Texas and some other states, teachers and other professionals who deal directly with children have a legal obligation to report evidence of abuse. For the rest of us, it is a moral obligation that comes with being a caring, contributing member of the community. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up free of sexual, physical or mental abuse. When faced with evidence that a child has been abused, every individual has a duty to report it to the proper authorities. As recent events demonstrate, silence and indifference are never an option. Children must have guardians and champions. In an increasingly dangerous world, that’s you.
