Uresti files for re-election to Senate District 19

November 30, 2011

Sen. Carlos Uresti on Wednesday officially filed for re-election to Senate District 19.

"It has been an honor to serve the people of San Antonio and West Texas for the last five years," Uresti said. "Together we have accomplished a lot, but much remains to be done."

During his legislative career, Uresti has helped enact reforms at Child Protective Services, created the Statewide Blue Ribbon Task Force, sponsored legislation protecting veterans and seniors, provided oversight of the Bexar Metropolitan Water District and authored a bill allowing for a dissolution election for the utility; given away 30,000 backpacks to school children; and collected and distributed more than 12,000 toys for children in need across the district.

Uresti, first elected to the Senate in 2006, is seeking his third term in the reconfigured district.

Because of changes made by the last Legislature and revisions ordered by a federal court, the district now includes much of southern and eastern Bexar County, most of Atascosa County and all of Brewster, Crockett, Dimmit, Edwards, Frio, Kinney, La Salle, Maverick, Medina, Real, Reeves, Pecos, Terrell, Uvalde, Val Verde and Zavala.

It no longer includes southern El Paso County or the counties of Bandera, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Loving, Presidio, Sutton, Ward and Winkler.

"Senate District 19 is still one of the poorest in Texas, so economic development, job creation, education and health care will be top priorities for me in the next session," Uresti said.
