December 2013 - Message from Carlos
It's time for my 17th Annual District Christmas Party and Toy Drive — an opportunity for me and you to put some joy into the holiday season for kids in Senate District 19's 17 counties.

I'm expecting up to 900 guests for this annual event, which will be held Friday, Dec. 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at VFW Post 9186, 650 VFW Blvd. in San Antonio.

Santa will be on hand, and so will your friends and neighbors as we enjoy each other's company with music, door prizes, and a free holiday meal, while extending a helping hand to our neighbors.

Wear something festive and bring unwrapped toys appropriate for infants or children through age 14.

The gifts we collect will be distributed by "Senator Santa" to hospitals and child care facilities across the district. Each year I look forward to playing Senator Santa; it's the most fun I have as a senator.

The Christmas season is the most special time of the year, and it can be even more special if you'll help me make sure that a child in need won't go without a gift this year.

For more information call 210-932-2568 or visit www.carlosuresti.com/christmas-2013.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Uvalde's community health care agency marks 30th anniversary

It's time to congratulate Community Health Development, Inc. for a job well done. For 30 years, CHDI has provided health care services to residents in Uvalde and surrounding communities who lack health insurance and access to quality medical care.

Formerly known as Uvalde County Clinic, Inc., the community-based health care agency was incorporated in 1983 to meet the health care needs of the underserved and working poor families. In serving this critical need, CHDI has grown over the years and now operates from four sites: Our Health/Nuestro Centro de Salud and The Center for Community Wellness in Uvalde; Rolling Hills Health in Leakey, and Canyon Health Center in Camp Wood.

Last year, some 70% of the 11,521 people served by the agency had no form of health insurance; 18% were 15 years of age or younger, and 13 percent were age 65 or older, the majority of whom suffer from multiple chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

"Under the guiding hand of Rachel Gonzales-Hanson, CHDI is accomplishing its mission of meeting the health care needs of its community. I want to send my congratulations to Rachel and her entire staff for reaching this important milestone and wish them the best for the next 30 years."

Community leaders, CHDI staff, and others will mark the 30th anniversary at a dinner on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Willie De Leon Civic Center in Uvalde.

Art lovers stand up to the ice in Alpine

Art isn't the first thing that comes to mind for most people when temperatures drop and sleet begins to fall. But artists and art patrons in West Texas didn't let inclement weather spoil Alpine's 2013 Art Walk.

While icy streets forced the cancellation of the Art Walk parade on Saturday, Nov. 23, art galleries and even outdoor stalls and food booths remained open along Holland Street, where art lovers bundled up against the cold, carefully maneuvered the sidewalks, and visited one venue after another.

Art Walk veterans said it has been cold in the past, but this was the first time the annual event was struck by ice.

They are hoping that Mother Nature will be more cooperative next year.

See the photo section for pictures of the Great Ice Walk of 2013.

Contracting conference set for San Antonio

The 13th Annual Bexar County and University Health System Small, Minority, Women and Veterans Business Owners Contracting Conference will be held in San Antonio on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Freeman Expo Hall.

Among the speakers for the event — designed to increase contracts for commodities, services and construction contracts for SMWVBs — will be Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, principal in the EJ Smith Construction Co.

The event will kick off with a networking breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m., and the exhibit hall will be open from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4 p.m. The event allows attendees to connect with hundreds of buyers from public and private organizations who want to do business with small, minority, women and veteran-owned businesses.

The event is free to the public.
