The Texas Senate passed HB 1, the state budget for the 2016-2017 biennium on April 14th and Uresti, as a member of the Finance Committee, spoke on the Senate floor to highlight the increase of $41 million for Child Protective Services prevention programs. On April 28th, the Senate overwhelmingly passed SB1734, Senator Uresti’s bill which creates a program to eradicate 'Carrizo Cane' along the Rio Grande. Also known by its scientific name, Arundo donax, Carrizo Cane is an invasive species that grows in thick patches near riversides. The Cane was brought to Texas by Spanish settlers in the 1500s, and has since infested much of the Rio Grande from Santa Elena Canyon to the Gulf of Mexico... [More]

The U.S. drilling rig count dropped to 905 early this month, its lowest level since June 2009. That’s less than half of the peak of 1,930 last year. Things were no better in Texas, where the rig count dropped to 380, down from 906 as recently as November, according to Baker Hughes. Texas still has 45 percent of the nation’s rigs at work...
