Senator Uresti just returned from his annual Senator Santa trip, where he visited with constituents in daycares and nursing homes throughout Senate District 19 and distributed toys to kids and gifts to elderly residents and staff.
To kick off the trip, Senator Uresti hosted his annual Christmas Party and Toy Drive at VFW Post 9186. Community leaders and constituents of Senate District 19 joined to collect hundreds of toys for children. Hundreds of guests had a great time with a full dinner, door prizes, and dancing.
A few days later, Senator Uresti and his staff, dressed as ‘Senator Santa’ and his ‘Misfits’, packed the toys in a box truck, er sleigh, and took off for a trip through Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Uvalde, Pearsall, Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, Hondo, and his birthplace, Lytle.
At each stop Senator Santa and his staff put on their Santa, elf and tree costumes to greet children, families and the elderly. The children had the biggest smiles and were extremely happy to meet Santa Claus and to receive their new toys! Many children even took the opportunity to pick out their own toys from Santa's bag. Santa and his elves also brightened the day of nursing home residents when they stopped by to chat and give out a small gift and calendars.
"This year's toy drive and distributing the toys has been extremely humbling, rewarding, and a lot of fun. I hope everyone gets to experience the gift of bringing a smile to a child's face this year," said Senator Uresti.
The Senator also made a stop to speak at the Middle Rio Grande COG quarterly meeting in Del Rio, where he discussed a range of issues from schools to veteran's mental health.
Since 1997, Senator Uresti collects and distributes toys to children in need across the district each holiday season.
