I write with a heavy heart after the past week. Watching our fellow Texans on the coast, Central Texas, Houston, and in Southeast Texas suffer the devastation of Hurricane Harvey was truly frightening. I speak on behalf of the 810,000+ constituents of District 19 in offering our sincere condolences and commitment to help your communities regain a sense of normalcy as you begin to rebuild.
As a first step of that commitment, and in an effort to help some of the most vulnerable children in our state, I’ve engaged the Blue Ribbon Task Force, in partnership with the Bexar County Child Welfare Board to ensure our great non-profits organizations are able to provide important services to our foster children and families who have been displaced to Bexar County.
Our foster children are some of the most vulnerable individuals that are being moved to temporary housing away from their communities. Shelters that will house these children and their families have specific needs, and our local organizations that provide services to these families need our immediate help. I hope those in the San Antonio Community with the means to do so will consider making a small donation at: www.bit.ly/FriendsofBexarCountyCWB.
As Texans, we have been tried and hammered down and tired before, and that is when we are at our best. We will get through this together, and we will not rest until our friends, family, neighbors, and pets are safe and secure. I look forward to working with the Houston and Coastal Bend Legislative Delegations and all my legislative colleagues to ensure their communities receive the assistance and resources they need to rebuild in the coming years.
